Total Body Imaging (TBP) is an important tool for the early detection of skin cancer, particularly in individuals at high risk. A specially trained professional, capturing clinical images of the patient’s entire skin surface. These images are stored for future reference, allowing healthcare providers to track changes in the skin over time.
TBP images can be stored in various formats, including digital computer systems, printed photographs, and mobile apps. Patients may also receive copies of the images for personal monitoring.
By comparing past and present images, doctors can identify new or evolving lesions, helping to detect skin cancer at an earlier, more treatable stage. While TBP is typically performed using 2D photography, some medical centres now also offer advanced 3D imaging technology.
Who Should have Today Body Photography?
Today Body Photography (TBP) may be recommended for you if you have any of the following risk factors:
What are the benefits?
Research supports the use of Today Body Photography (TBP) as an effective tool for the early detection of melanoma in high-risk individuals—particularly those with numerous moles or a history of multiple primary melanomas. Studies have shown that in high-risk patients, about one-third of melanomas are identified solely through changes observed on TBP images.
Melanomas detected through TBI are often found at an earlier, lower-risk stage, increasing the likelihood of successful treatment. Additionally, TBI can help reduce unnecessary removal of benign (noncancerous) lesions.
It's important to note that TBP is just one method of monitoring for melanoma and should be used alongside regular clinical skin examinations.
TBP is a painless, non-invasive procedure typically conducted in a dedicated photography studio equipped with appropriate lighting and imaging technology. The entire session usually takes around 10–15 minutes.
Before the session begins, the photographer will explain the process in detail, including how your images will be taken and stored. You’ll be asked to sign a consent form to confirm that you understand and agree to proceed.
During the session, you’ll be asked to undress down to your underwear to ensure that as much of your skin as possible is visible for imaging. The photographer will take a series of standardized photographs while you stand in various poses. Each image will include an anatomical reference point to clearly identify the area of the body being photographed.
After the session, your images will be stored securely in accordance with the protocols of your treating medical centre. Depending on your personal risk factors and medical history, TBP may be repeated annually or performed once as a baseline for future comparison.
